Did you watch the Grand Designs series on Channel 4 featuring the build of an entirely new, sustainable home in Hertfordshire with VELFAC windows?

In seven months Facit Homes planned and built an elegant and enviromentally friendly new home with numerous VELFAC windows on behalf of the two owners who were on the outlook for a modern house, in which to enjoy their retirement.

The new house makes excellent use of the symmetry and orientation of the site, whilst the overall massing is sympathetic to the location and its neighbours. Large, south facing windows help to keep the house warm in the winter, and solar shading help to keep heat gains to a minimum in summer. The house uses natural, unfinished materials to blend in with its rural context.

The building envelope is super insulated to 0.14 W/m2k, to the same U-value as required for the German Passive Haus standard. The super insulated nature of the building extends to the windows, which are triple glazed to maximise heat retention in cold weather, and essential for a building with large areas of glazing.

The Facit Mobile Production Facility is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. After a smooth seven months on site the build was completed apart from the external landscaping.
